Understanding of rivet studs
There are many types of riveting fasteners used in the sheet metal industry. This article will analyze the characteristics of the riveting stud product.
Rivet studs, also known as rivet nut studs, are internally threaded products, hence the term “nut” is added. In the standard parts industry, “nut” refers to an internally threaded product. What are the standard specifications for rivet studs? Are they installed in the same way as commonly used nuts? Are there any special requirements for their materials? Let’s take a closer look at rivet nut studs.

First, let’s talk about the materials of rivet studs. This is relatively simpler, with only two types: one is carbon steel galvanized, and the other is stainless steel. Currently, other materials are not available. Why are these two materials the only choices for material selection? Can’t there be more options? Actually, once you understand the installation method of rivet studs, it becomes clearer why only these two materials are used. Let’s look at the picture above to understand.

The above rivet stud product without a through hole, featuring a hexagonal head with a cylindrical body and an internal thread, constitutes a standard rivet stud. It is produced through automatic lathe turning. Its standard follows the early military standards of the United States, similar to rivet nuts, and has been widely adopted by civilian industries since its civilian use. Therefore, there is no national standard to regulate rivet nuts. However, the absence of a national standard does not mean that its dimensions can be changed arbitrarily. According to the regulatory documents of the riveting industry, each specification of rivet stud has specific dimensional standards for its hexagonal side and thickness. Let’s refer to the table below, which clearly indicates the dimensions of all specifications of rivet studs, except for length.

What are the standards for rivet studs? In China, rivet studs do not have a national standard code for description. This product is a knockoff that has been circulated from abroad. It is used as an internal thread, hence the name rivet nut stud. From the two images above, we can see that apart from different materials, it is also divided into through-hole and blind-hole types. Currently, the equipment used to produce rivet studs is precision automatic lathes and CNC machines. Rivet studs are produced with high precision and can be installed and used on sheet metal with a thickness of 0.5 millimeters. Stainless steel rivet studs can be used in very harsh environments for up to twenty years without rusting.
